HMONG REVERSE APPLIQUE

1 2

The Hmong are those of the Miao who have migrated from Southwest China, chiefly the provinces of Yunnan and Guizhou (the term Hmong is used to refer to those Miao living outside China; with China they refer to themselves as Miao).  Over the years they migrated and settled in the North of Thailand, and in Laos and Vietnam. The Hmong costume is fascinating. At festivals, it distinguishes ethnicity, locality, gender, age and status. It is beautifully decorated with embroidery, paste- or wax-resist batik, and appliqué. Many of these techniques will be on display.

This textile workshop will focus on the technique of reverse appliqué, which is widely used to decorate apron bands and other garments. There are basic designs and many other variations. The finished work looks complicated, but once basic techniques in folding and cutting are mastered, Hmong reverse appliqué is fascinating and pleasing. It also opens the door to many other possibilities.

The workshop will include visits to the markets and especially the lane where the hill people sell their textiles.  There are lovely haberdashers to explore in the same area.  In addition there is the local Thailand Hill-tribe Museum.
