TRADITIONAL PATCHWORK QUILTS
These textile workshops will explore a variety of traditional designs, looking at the origins of the design, suitable materials, basic techniques, assembling the patchwork and quilting the piece, finishing the quilt and, finally, variations on the design.
Since there are so many traditional designs, not all can be covered in a single workshop; each workshop will therefore offer one design, e.g. Log Cabin or Drunkard’s Path, or the workshop can be arranged to explore one design of particular interest to the group.
CONTEMPORARY PATCHWORK QUILTS
My work is almost exclusively in silk. Although other materials can be used, the workshop will concentrate on the use of silk as the medium, as most people’s perception of silk is that it is a difficult and expensive material to work with.
Silk is probably one of the most sumptuous and beautiful fabrics. One of the properties is that it has a natural sheen, which means that if the same overall effect is to be achieved when designing patchwork, the grain of the silk has to be pieced in the same direction. On the other hand, designing patchwork to take advantage of the grain of the silk in the design can be very exciting and very attractive.
The workshop offers a practical approach to handling the fabric and exploring its sheen and colour, as well as encouraging students to look at their own ideas and different possibilities for their own work. All aspects of piecing and quilting are included. Students will also have the opportunity to see some of my own work.
Both workshops will include visits to the market, where there are many textile and haberdashery shops to explore. Different silks and cottons - especially cottons - and hemp are locally woven.
