My interest in textiles began when I started designing and making patchwork quilts in the 1970s while still in Thailand. On moving to the UK I established a national and international reputation with a series of exhibitions, workshops and private and public commissions, including those for Milton Keynes General Hospital, the Royal London Assurance Group, Ipswich City Council and the Quilters Guild.
I lived in the UK for more than 25 years, and have an excellent command of English. In 1997/98 I studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London), where I was awarded a MA in South-East Asian Studies. This, plus my extensive experience of lecturing and giving workshops throughout the UK, has given me a unique insight into the traditions and way of life of Thailand and South-east Asia both from the point of view of a local resident and from a Western stand-point.
Following my studies at SOAS, I have organised and led a series of specialist tours to South-East Asia, focusing on the textiles and traditions of Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, and the Miao and other minority people of SW China. I have an extensive collection of textiles from the region and personal contacts with local weavers, collectors, dealers and other textile experts.
My husband and I now have a home in Chiangmai in the North of Thailand, where I am continuing to design and make quilts, as well as offering a variety of textile study programmes. I am introducing my work by exhibiting alongside local and international artists here in Chiangmai and in Bangkok.
The tours which I have organised in the past will continue to be offered, and in addition the studio is available for people who wish to attend workshops in Chiangmai, or to undertake textile studies in the area. These workshops and study programmes can be undertaken with me, or the studio is available for teachers from outside Thailand to come with their students for a short residential programme. Workspace and accommodation are both available on-site.
