TOURS BY SIRIPAN KIDD
I have organised and led textile tours since 1998. The first was to Thailand and Laos, and was followed by tours to Cambodia and Vietnam, and finally to Guizhou in SW China, where the majority of the population are Miao and Dong. Tours now include Myanmar.
The tours last two-and-a-half to three weeks each, often planned to coincide with a local festival. The size of the group is limited to 10, so that personal contact between me as tour leader and the members of the group can be kept close. Small numbers also ensure that the villages which are visited are not overwhelmed by large numbers of visitors, and the impact of the visit on the local culture and environment is kept as low as possible.
All the places on the itinerary have been researched, visited and checked by me personally before the tour is undertaken, and hotel accommodation and transport arrangements have been similarly vetted.
The tours are not package tours in the conventional sense, i.e. there is not a rigid timetable with lectures at each point. The aim is rather to travel as if the group is a group of friends with common interests, exploring and exchanging ideas and experiences. I feel strongly that the group should have the feel of the place, so the tour is not rushed from one place to the next. The timing of the day’s activities is intentionally flexible so as to take advantage of any “happenstance” opportunities that may arise. At the same time, of course, there is a clearly outlined itinerary for each day, and I and/or local experts are on hand to discuss and answer any questions that may arise. The tours include visits to textile makers, artists, designers and collectors, most of whom are or over the years have become friends, as well as visits to collections, and practical workshops.
